TUCSON, ARIZONA (May 5, 2025) – A 42-year-old motorcyclist identified as Colby Sweet has tragically died in a Tucson car accident on Calle Polar by Golf Links and Wilmot.
Pima County officials are saying that the accident took place on Friday night. A 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck was stopped at a stop sign. That driver proceeded to make a left turn into the path of Colby Sweet, who was riding a motorcycle.
The motorcyclist was unable to avoid the collision and hit the side of the pickup truck. Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim.
Despite life-saving measures, Colby Sweet was later pronounced dead. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Drivers in Arizona must use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles on the roadway. They must be particularly cautious when making turns. According to Arizona Vehicle Code 28-772, “The driver of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left shall yield the right-of-way to a vehicle that is approaching from the opposite direction and that is within the intersection or so close to the intersection as to constitute an immediate hazard.” Several factors could contribute to any left turn collision involving a truck.
If a driver makes an unprotected turn into the path of a motorcycle or another vehicle, this could be considered negligent. It may also form the basis of a civil claim. Depending on the specific facts of any case, liability for a car accident could extend to several parties. This is particularly true if a truck or other vehicle was being used for a commercial purpose at the time of a crash.
Motorcyclists lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are uniquely vulnerable in the event of a crash. According to the National Safety Council, “Although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.6% of all vehicle miles traveled in the United States, motorcyclists accounted for 16.2% of all traffic fatalities and 3.6% of all injuries in 2024.” Multiple actions should be taken after any Tucson car accident.
The vast majority of car accidents are totally preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are not paying adequate attention before initiating turns. It is important that the victims of truck accidents understand that they do have legal rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action. This right extends to the family of any person killed in a collision. They have a right to pursue a wrongful death claim.
We at The Law Offices of John Phebus extend our deepest condolences to the family of Colby Sweet. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. This was a tragedy that should’ve never taken place. Many questions have yet to be answered.
