Glendale will be the epicenter of the football world this weekend. The Super Bowl pitting the Seahawks versus the Patriots promises to be an exciting one.
The contest also promises to be the reason police departments across the Valley – especially officers in Glendale, Phoenix and Scottsdale – will be out in force looking for DUI offenders. They will be out tonight and into the wee hours of Monday morning looking for signs of motorist impairment.
“We’ll have eyes all over the place and the ability to react to things that we see,” a Glendale police spokesperson said. The city has been busy rolling out extra DUI patrols and promises to do more of the same in coming days. They are patrolling the Westgate Entertainment District and Super Bowl Fan Festival near the stadium, the spokesperson said.
Scottsdale patrols are going to be heavy as well, and also feature officers going out to pubs and game-related events to offer breathalyzer tests to people.
Downtown Phoenix will be blanketed by motorcycle cops near Super Bowl Central and the NFL Experience. The 12-block area is going to have police vans at the north and south ends, where people can also be tested for BAC (blood alcohol content).
As you undoubtedly know, in Arizona the legal threshold is 0.08 percent. But we also empower our police departments to arrest people who don’t have a BAC that high, but do show signs of alcohol or drug impairment.
Whether you’re going to the game or watching it with friends at a bar or at a friend’s home, please remember to appoint a designated driver to get everyone home safely.
