SUN LAKES, ARIZONA (March 26, 2026) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Sun Lakes car accident by the intersection of Alma School Road and Riggs Road.
Maricopa County officials are saying that the accident took place around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. A pedestrian was crossing the roadway and using the crosswalk when they were struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the injured victim. Life-saving efforts were attempted. Sadly, he was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene.
A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Drivers have a legal obligation to exercise caution and slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian ahead of them. Pursuant to Arizona Revised Statutes § 28-794, “Notwithstanding the provisions of this chapter every driver of a vehicle shall: 1. Exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian on any roadway. 2. Give warning by sounding the horn when necessary. 3. Exercise proper precaution on observing a child or a confused or incapacitated person on a roadway.” Pedestrian accidents are more likely in many different settings.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the roadway, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Even if a pedestrian is in the middle of the roadway, this does not relieve a driver of the duty to use care to avoid a collision. Liability for a pedestrian accident could extend beyond any driver determined to be at fault. In particular, it is relatively common for pickup trucks to be used for commercial purposes.
Far too many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured in preventable collisions each year. Children and older adults are particularly vulnerable. According to the Children’s Safety Network, “Every year, an average of 67,124 child pedestrians are injured. 704 of those child pedestrians die. As it grows darker earlier, child pedestrians become harder to see. 36% of the deaths of children under 16 occurred between 3:00 and 7:00 PM.” Several steps should be taken after any Arizona pedestrian accident.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are not properly scanning the road ahead of them. Victims of pedestrian accidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of justice and accountability through a civil claim. This right extends to the family of any person who died. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
We at The Law Offices of John Phebus extend our deepest condolences to the family of the pedestrian who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. It is our sincere hope that measures are taken to prevent other tragedies at this intersection.
