YUMA COUNTY, ARIZONA (March 15, 2026) – A 31-year-old man identified as Jesus Velazquez has tragically died in a Yuma County car accident at East County 18 1/2 Streets and South Avenue 3E.
Yuma County officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:30 AM on Monday. Jesus Velazquez was standing near a parked vehicle on the south side of the roadway.
He and another person were hit by a red Mazda truck that veered into eastbound lanes and crashed into the car he was next to. That driver did not remain at the scene.
Paramedics were called from the scene of the crash to help the victims. Both were taken to the hospital to receive treatment.
Sadly, Jesus Velazquez died due to his injuries. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Drivers in Arizona must use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles and pedestrians. To that end, they must consistently maintain their vehicles at a safe speed. According to Arizona Vehicle Code 28-701, “A person shall not drive a vehicle on a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the circumstances, conditions and actual and potential hazards then existing.” Drivers should take several actions to avoid collisions.
When a driver is involved in a collision, they must remain at the scene and cooperate with police. Fleeing the scene of a car accident that results in a person being injured is a crime. Drivers could also face civil liability for a car accident. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Negligence is the failure to use proper care to avoid causing harm.
Car accidents remain a major cause of serious injury and death for pedestrians. Certain conditions make pedestrian accidents more likely. According to the National Safety Council, “most pedestrian traffic deaths occurred in urban settings (83%), on the open road (76%) versus intersections (24%), and during dark conditions with or without artificial lighting (74%).” It is important that certain actions are taken after any Yuma County car accident.
It can be difficult to know where to begin after any car accident. Victims are often left with catastrophic injuries. Families may need to contend with the sudden loss of a loved one. To make matters worse, drivers will virtually never accept responsibility after a collision. However, victims of car accidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to pursue some measure of accountability and transparency through a civil action.
We at The Law Offices of John Phebus extend our deepest condolences to the family of Jesus Velazquez. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what happened. Many questions remain unanswered at this time.
