LAVEEN, PHOENIX (April 9, 2026) – A woman has tragically died after being hit by a hip-hop truck while walking at a park in Laveen, Phoenix near 35th Avenue and Melody Drive.
Maricopa County officials are saying that the accident took place around 7:48 AM near a grassy area of Cesar Chavez Park. A female pedestrian was struck by an out-of-control pickup truck.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. She was transported to a local area hospital in critical condition.
Sadly, she was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the hospital. Speed may have been a contributing factor to the crash.
A full investigation remains ongoing.
Drivers in Arizona must use caution to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. This requires that they travel at a safe speed at all times. According to Arizona Vehicle Code 28-701, “A person shall not drive a vehicle on a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the circumstances, conditions and actual and potential hazards then existing.” There are many reasons that speeding could contribute to a crash.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, this could be construed as negligence. The legal responsibility for a collision could extend to several different entities beyond one person determined to be at fault for a crash. This is especially true if a pickup truck was being used for commercial purposes at the time of the crash. Employers in Arizona can be liable for the wrongful conduct of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
Car accidents are a major cause of preventable injury and death for pedestrians. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, “Drivers struck and killed 7,148 people walking in the United States in 2024, down 4.3% from the year before and the second annual decline, but nearly 20% higher than the 2016 level.” It is important that certain actions are taken after any pedestrian collision.
The vast majority of pedestrian collisions are preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are speeding, distracted, or not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. The factors that contribute to any crash can take place many hours or weeks before the actual event. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
We at The Law Offices of John Phebus extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
