TUCSON, ARIZONA (March 31, 2026) – A pedestrian identified as Jonathan Warren has tragically died in a Sahuarita hit-and-run car accident along Interstate 19.
Pima County officials are saying the accident took place around 1:39 AM on March 3. Arizona troopers received a report about a man walking by the travel lanes of Interstate 19.
By the time they arrived at the scene, they discovered Jonathan Warren in the median lane. He was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators discovered car parts at the scene that belonged to a 2018-2025 Mercedes Sprinter van. The suspected driver of that van reportedly left the scene and has since been located.
He has been charged with failure to remain at the scene of a fatal collision and was being held at the Pima County Jail. A full investigation into the fatal pedestrian crash that killed Jonathan Warren remains ongoing.
Every driver in Arizona must use caution to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway. According to A.R.S. § 28-794, “Notwithstanding the provisions of this chapter every driver of a vehicle shall: 1. Exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian on any roadway.  2. Give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.  3. Exercise proper precaution on observing a child or a confused or incapacitated person on a roadway.” There are many mistakes that a driver could make that may contribute to a pedestrian collision.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, this could serve as evidence of negligence. Even if a pedestrian is in the middle of the roadway, this does not relieve a driver of their duty of care to take action. Liability for any collision could extend beyond one particular driver. This is particularly true if a truck or a van is involved in a crash. These types of vehicles are routinely used for commercial purposes. The company that owned such a vehicle involved in a crash could also be legally responsible.
Steps to Take After Pima County Hit-and-Run Accidents
Far too many people are seriously injured or killed every year in hit-and-run car accidents. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “There were an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in 2015 (NHTSA, 2016). This translates to a hit-and-run crash happening somewhere in the U.S. every 43 seconds. The 2,049 fatalities that resulted from hit-and-run crashes in 2016 were the highest number ever recorded (NHTSA, 2017).” Several actions should be taken after any hit-and-run car accident.
The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are totally preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers were not properly scanning the road ahead of them. Sadly, negligent drivers and their insurance providers almost never accept responsibility if they caused a fatal crash. In far too many situations, they will blame the victim for what happened. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at The Law Offices of John Phebus extend our deepest condolences to the family of Jonathan Warren. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what happened.
