PHOENIX, ARIZONA (March 29, 2026) – A woman has tragically died in a semi-truck accident near the Phoenix-Tolleson border by 75th Avenue and Sherman Drive.
Maricopa County officials are saying that the accident took place shortly before 4:00 AM on Saturday morning. A woman was traveling down the road in a white SUV when she was involved in a collision with a semi-truck.
The force of the impact caused major front-end damage to the SUV. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.
She was extricated from the vehicle with critical injuries. Sadly, she was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene.
A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Truck drivers are expected to operate vehicles with an abundance of caution. They must continuously scan the road ahead of them and check blind spots before making any turn. According to Arizona Vehicle Code 28-772, “The driver of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left shall yield the right-of-way to a vehicle that is approaching from the opposite direction and that is within the intersection or so close to the intersection as to constitute an immediate hazard.” There could be multiple liable parties for any truck accident.
When a truck driver fails to yield the right-of-way to other vehicles before making a turn in the roadway, this could serve as evidence of negligence. The employer that a truck driver worked for could also be liable for a crash. Generally speaking, employers can be liable for the negligent actions of their workers. However, truck companies will often hire their drivers as independent contractors to limit their legal exposure in the event of a crash.
Semi-trucks account for a relatively small number of the total vehicles on the roadway, but they are involved in a disproportionately high number of fatal collisions. According to the IIHS, “Most deaths in large truck crashes are passenger vehicle occupants. The main problem is the vulnerability of people traveling in smaller vehicles. Trucks often weigh 20-30 times as much as passenger cars and are taller with greater ground clearance, which can result in smaller vehicles underriding trucks in crashes.” There are several other reasons why commercial trucks can be particularly dangerous.
It can be difficult to know what to do after any truck accident. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer catastrophic injuries and may need to take extensive periods of time away from their jobs. Victims of truck accidents are protected by a number of laws. They are able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. This right extends to the surviving family members of any person who died.
We at The Law Offices of John Phebus extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the Arizona State Police. There needs to be a major investigation into what went wrong. Many different questions remain unanswered.
