TUCSON, ARIZONA (April 17, 2026) – A man identified as John May has tragically died in a Tucson car accident near the intersection of West Grant Road and North 15th Road.
Pima County officials are saying that the accident took place on Wednesday, April 1. John May was driving down the road in a Dodge Ram when he was hit by a Silverado making a turn onto northbound 15th Road.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. John May was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado was cited with failure to yield and has since been arrested. A full investigation of the collision remains ongoing at this time.
Every driver in Arizona has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid colliding with other vehicles. This necessitates that they yield before turns. According to Arizona Vehicle Code 28-772, “The driver of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left shall yield the right-of-way to a vehicle that is approaching from the opposite direction and that is within the intersection or so close to the intersection as to constitute an immediate hazard.” There are many factors that could contribute to any car accident.
If a driver turns into the path of another vehicle prior to a crash, this could serve as evidence of negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that moves into the path of another moving vehicle. Depending on the facts of any specific accident, liability for a collision could extend beyond any specific driver. This is particularly true if a pickup truck was being used for a commercial purpose. It is relatively common for vans and pickup trucks to be used in a variety of different industries, including construction, landscaping, and contracting.
Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “2024 marks the third consecutive decrease in deaths. Deaths decreased 4.4% in 2024, following a 3% drop in 2023 and a 2% decline in 2022. This improvement is in contrast to the 20% increase in deaths experienced from 2019 to 2021.” After any fatal car accident, certain measures should be taken.
The vast majority of car accidents are preventable. They tend to involve situations where drivers are not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. Sadly, drivers and their insurance providers will virtually never accept responsibility for any serious collision. This is why it is so important that these incidents are investigated by an outside party. The family of any person who died in a car accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at The Law Offices of John Phebus extend our deepest condolences to the family of John May. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. This was a preventable crash that should not have taken place. Many questions remain unanswered at this time.
